Earth Science Scavenger Hunt 2005 J

            Earth Science has a massive impact on our lives, the well-being of Earth itself and the rest of its inhabitants. Often times however, this impact goes unnoted. For this project, it is your job to find and explain some of these impacts and present your findings in a neat, orderly, creative and professional way.

            You assignment is to find at least 15 items that show a clear relationship between life (human and/or animal) and Earth science. Each item is worth 5 points. Your paper is worth 25, for a total of 100 points.

DUE MARCH 11th  You will lose 10% everyday that it is turned in late

Topics

Your items must cover a variety of topics in Earth Science. The following are the required topics for your items

  • 2 items about Weather, 1 must be about a weather event in Michigan
  • 2 items about Environmental Earth science issues
  • 1 item about Earthquakes—(not Tsunamis or other phenomena caused by  Earthquakes)
  • 1 item about Volcanoes
  • 1 item about Tsunamis
  • 1 item about Water – such as flooding, drinking water supplies, lakes etc
  • 1 item about Hurricanes
  • 1 item about Tornadoes
  • 5 items about your choice of topics—you can include more items about the above topics, or new topics such as rocks, plate tectonics, geology, land features, mountain climbing, surviving the elements, etc.

Sources

Your items must be from the following sources:

  • 2 Newspaper articles, from actual newspapers, NOT newspaper websites. (photo copies are acceptable)
  • 2 Magazine articles, from actual magazines, NOT magazine websites.  (photo copies are acceptable
  • 2 Large, at least half a page sized, pictures ( can be in black & white, or in color)
  • 2 Internet articles – including newspaper sites such as LSJ.com or msnbc.com
  • 1 poem or short story (you may check with your English teachers for help or in your English books)
  • 1 national geographic article (photo copies are acceptable and encouraged)
  • 5 items of your choice
    • These items can be anything you chose, except—you may add only 1 more article from the internet, for a possible total of no more 3 internet articles
    • Ideas for choices:
      • Pamphlets ( many groups, associations etc will send you free information if you email or write them)
      • Audio or Video clips—must be able to share these with the class
      • Art work
      • Other poems or short stories – you may include one poem or short story that you personally have authored
      • I am open to most anything else for your choice items, except the following: Books or Samples from earth itself ( such as rocks or small animals)

Presentation

Once you have all 15 of your items, present them in neat, professional, creative way. You must include a cover or title page. Any articles or clippings must be stapled or taped to a full size piece of paper.

 

Paper

            Your paper should be 12 pt font, no more than 1 inch margins, double spaced and at least 1 page long. Each section must be labeled and should thoughtfully your ideas about each section.

o        In what ways were humans at fault for the events, or the results of the events?

o        Describe your reaction to the events depicted in your items.

o        How has your perception of the relationship between Earth Science and life changed after reading/observing the events in your items?
