(From the ) Jeff K., John G, Liz G take a break after working hard for Habitat for Humanity.

Students from Lansing Catholic Central have been traveling to the south to assist in building Habitat for Humanity homes.  Lansing Catholic Central students who participate in Habitat for Humanity exhibit their ability and willingness to perform difficult, and challenging work, as well as the ability to get along with others.  The students work nearly all day, beginning at about 7:45 am, and ending around 5:00 pm.  Twenty committed students from Lansing Catholic Central go on this trip every year.  The mission project makes an enormous difference in the local area.  The students are able to help build a home for a family that would otherwise be without one.  On the way down and on the way back from the south the students and supervisors do a little sight seeing.  Some places that they go are capitol buildings, historical sites, tourist attractions and the Mammoth Caves.

Improving the lives of impoverished families living in less than adequate conditions

On this two week missionary trip to Cuernava, Mexico, a group of ten Lansing Catholic Central students was able to build two houses, one large and one small, using only the tools in the local area.  The group worked with the local community, overcoming many obstacles along the way, including scorpions and extremely poor terrain.  The girls of the group were also able to partially restore a large area of a center for the mentally ill.  Throughout the trip, the students also interacted with the members of the local parish on an almost daily basis, and grew greatly in their faith.  The trip not only benefitted the students lives, but also the lives of the many people whom they helped.  This  incredible group of students was able to reach out and make a difference in that community's life.

This is a picture of the original house that the family lived in.  This original house spanned an area of about 10’x15’, and at its highest point was about 6’2". In front of the house, as you can see, is a rock pile that is about 5-6 feet deep and about 4’ high. It took seven of the students the better part of 5 hours to move the entire pile and clear out the entire lot.
This picture was taken on one of the final days of construction. This is a picture of the rear of the main house, and shows just how big this house actually is, in comparison to the old one. This also is a good view of one of the four rock walls, and it shows the great difference in height from that of the front wall. Upon completing the roof and side walls, the students filled the interior of the house with a dump truck full of fill dirt, and then were aided by a local construction worker in adding a level cement floor, which was quite a luxury.
